Great Smoky Mountains National Park was dedicated in 1934. The first arch, very tiny on this ornament, was erected in 1933 to show the way to the Smokies from downtown Waynesville. The only one of its kind, it was removed in 1972 because of rust and wear and tear. In 2024, the Downtown Waynesville Association got permission from the NCDOT to erect a new arch very similar to the old one. It crosses Main Street in front of the Waynesville Police Dept. and Town Hall.
